Future Vehicles and Systems

Tactical Vehicles (TV) are those used by the various branches of the armed services or government for both offensive and defensive missions. Non-tactical vehicles (NTV), on the other hand, include any vehicle that carries freight or passengers for operational, administrative or direct military purpose. Nested under this category are such military utilities as utility trucks, flatbeds, tracked utility vehicles, box haulers, earth moving equipment, construction equipment, bulldozers and plows. These utility vehicles can be modified to carry various implements including guns and ammunition, vehicle mounted scopes, laser markers, tactical gear, and explosives.

The U.S. Army, the Marines and the Navy often use standard M2 and M3 armored motor vehicles for non-tactical purposes. However, in times of emergency or high risk, these organizations rely heavily on their tactical vehicles to provide rapid field assistance, safe passage, rapid transport of wounded soldiers or civilians, and transportation of heavy military equipment. As a result, many of these motorized utilities are part of a joint fleet inventory system.

In the past, U.S. Army and Marine Corps operators relied heavily on Manned Recovery vehicles (MRVs) to transport troops and supplies to and from designated combat locations. These MRVs were part of the conventional vehicle inventory and underwent regular service updates and maintenance. As part of tactical vehicle training and practice, operators used their existing Manned Recovery vehicles to conduct mock tactical exercises that simulated offensive and defensive maneuvers against an imaginary hostile force. In order to conduct their mock operations, the command members of the operational staff conducted a series of exercises that included preparing a detailed tactical map, preparing an initial battle plan, and developing fire control procedures. While most of the vehicles in a standard MRV configuration contained wheeled drive systems, some specialty vehicles such as tracking utility trucks and dump trucks had two wheel drive suspension, providing the ability to rapidly deploy troops or other objects to designated tactical locations.

Although the demand for MRVs is likely to continue growing, the operational requirement for the MRV will likely diminish in the future as vehicles become more fully automated and become less vital to daily operations. The main function of these vehicles is to transport personnel and equipment from one location to another. With advances in technology and robotics, vehicle mobility is now becoming more important than weight. The production forecast for MRV sales and development is based on this trend and is predicted to continue to increase through the next ten years.

One area where there has been a lot of investment is in the development of a more customizable, tactical mobility system for the Manned Reconnaissance vehicles. Currently, production capabilities include two door and two-wheel drive utility vehicles, which allow for greater adaptability to various environments. The objective is to develop a single vehicle that can be reconfigured to fit various mission profiles including scout vehicles, spotters, surveillance vehicle support, tank and other self-supporting tactical vehicles, as well as other utility vehicles. As companies continue to invest in this field of engineering, the ability to quickly reconfigure vehicles for new missions will become even easier to do.

There are also a variety of additional features and abilities that are being developed for future tactical vehicles. Two of the most significant items are the ability to reconfigure and transport personnel and are also helping with the development of a remote-land transfer system. The ability to reconfigure is necessary when it comes to deploying forces to locations or when circumstances dictate that a vehicle needs to change positions. The second item relates to the ability of the vehicle to stay in place and stay mobile while at the same time providing an offensive or defensive solution to the threat it faces. These capabilities are important to the military services and allow for greater flexibility in both deployed and combat situations.
