Vehicle Armoring Technology - A New Horizon For Armorers
Vehicle armoring technology is a growing field in the world of vehicles. Armoring for passenger automobiles began in North America around 1970 with the development of GM's Delta Armoring. This was designed to improve the overall mechanical and structural integrity of the automobile by adding a layer of armor between the road and the interior of the car. It was originally intended to be used on light trucks and sport utility vehicles, but eventually it was applied to nearly all light vehicles produced in the U.S.
Today, vehicle armoring technology has grown so much that it is now being applied to ambulances as well. New technology has developed, which provides hospitals and other medical facilities with a protective armor plated on the outside of many vehicles. This way, medical personnel are protected not only from physical harm but also from objects that could cause injury or even death if they were to penetrate the layer of armor plating.

Perhaps the most notable application of vehicle armoring technology is found inside commercial vehicles. This includes both passenger cars and trucks. Since most commercial vehicles are transported around the globe, their internal structures are subject to a great deal of potential damage from natural disasters such as earthquakes or floods. In order to better protect these structures, manufacturers have begun fitting heavy steel ribs called "torsion straps" into their bodies. These straps are typically made up of galvanized steel, but there are many instances where plastics or polyester materials are used as well. The galvanized steel is capable of handling a tremendous amount of force, while the polyester materials provide a more flexible and lightweight solution.
Another application of vehicle armoring technology has been found with the construction of commercial aircraft. Typically, this type of armor is used on the external skin, or outer surface, of the aircraft. One example of this would be the development of a crash barrier, which is used to protect the fuselage from damage during take off and landing. Developments in the field of aerospace have also resulted in the development of reinforced glass in order to protect the windows from damage in the event that the aircraft is hit by an in flight explosion.

The United States Army and United States Marine Corps have both applied vehicle armoring technology to the internal working of their military forces. This includes components such as the Joint Tactical Vehicle as well as the Jeep tank. Recently, the Israeli armed forces have applied this same type of armor technology to their tanks in order to increase the overall effectiveness of the armored vehicle itself.
Given the important role that armored vehicles play in both the defense and business worlds, it is no surprise that so many defense contractors are currently looking towards the private marketplace for help with their armored vehicle needs. Just recently there have been some very strong investments made by private parties into this field. For instance, Daimler-Chrysler made a large acquisition of a company called Krones Inc. in order to bolster their business in the military-industrial sector. In addition, United Technologies acquired a large chunk of Unverity of Maryland's Black River Technologies, another company that has a lot of experience in developing and manufacturing armored vehicles. If these trends continue it is quite likely that many more major corporations will be seeking assistance with their armor needs from outside the joint venture business sector.
